Vivendi SA, formerly Vivendi Universal, is a French international media conglomerate headquartered in Paris. A subsidiary of the company, Vivendi Games, is the publisher of F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon, and licensed TimeGate Studios to develop two expansions, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, which were published by the now-defunct Sierra Entertainment. In September 2008, after merging with Activision to form Activision-Blizzard, Vivendi sold the rights of the F.E.A.R. series name to Monolith Productions, after receiving lackluster reviews over its own F.E.A.R. series installments.

Vivendi has a particularly long history as a company, having been formed as a water company in 1853 by order of Emperor Napoleon III. In 1976 the company diversified, soon dealing with waste management, power, transport services and construction, and getting involved in the automobile industry. Their move into the entertainment industry began in 1983 with the company, at that time still called Compagnie Générale des Eaux (CGE), helping to set up France's first pay-per-view channel, Canal+. After further involvement in the media sector following the deregulation of the French telecommunications market in 1996, CGE changed its name to Vivendi in 1998. The company split into two in 2000, forming Vivendi Universal and Vivendi Environnement, which later became Veolia Environment.
